4BR met up with Richard Evans to talk about his British Open memories

In the build up to the 2018 British Open Championship at Symphony Hall in Birmingham on the weekend, 4BR and the iconic Gold Shield met up with the great Richard Evans.

He talks about his early appearances at the British Open at Belle Vue, his conducting debut and victory with Wingates Band on 'Fireworks' in 1975 and his second victory on 'Salamander' in 1994 with BNFL Band.

Keep a keen ear out though for his tale about the famous Leyland white jackets — and the appropriate accompanying sound of an ice cream van that came past his house as we spoke.

4BR wants to ensure that the brass band movement remains vibrant and relevant. We also want to be able to question, challenge and critically examine those who run and play in it, producing high quality journalism that informs as well as entertains our readers.

So if like us you value a strong, independent perspective on the brass band world - then why not consider becoming a supporter and help make our future and that of a burgeoning brass band movement more secure.

So one less cappuccino then?
