Derwent aims low with latest initiative

Derwent Brass has come up with a new way to give low brass players performance opportunities.

dEEP DOWN
Derwent's latest initiative is aimed at low brass performers.

Derwent Brass continues to showcase innovative ways to attract both audiences and players to enjoy brass band music making.

Their latest initiative is 'Tubamania', a one day event designed to provide opportunities for low brass instrumentalists on tuba, euphonium and baritone to perform music ranging from the traditional to the experimental as well as enhance established techniques and explore new and unorthodox directions.

Interest

Conceived by Ben Armstrong and Adam Rutter as a way of bringing like-minded local musicians together, the one-day programme (aimed at players roughly of Grade 6 standard and above) has already created a great deal of interest.

Adam told 4BR: "We've had a really positive response. We are keeping costs as low as possible thanks to Derwent Brass and Strutt's Community Project for whose support we are extremely grateful.

Tubamania promises to be a fantastic opportunity to come together and play with other low brass players and experience the joy and tone of tuba and low brass ensemble playing."

Schedule

The schedule for the day includes massed warm-up, ensemble playing, technical and full massed rehearsals which will culminate in a free teatime public concert showcasing some of the day's repertoire.

The event is being hosted at the Strutt's Centre, Derby Road, Belper, Derbyshire (DE56 1UU) on Sunday 4th August (10.00am to 6.00pm) with donations requested to help meet the costs of around £10-£15.

The event is open to those aged over 13, though anyone aged under 18 must register an adult guardian.
