2003 Yorkshire Regional Qualifying Championships
Third Section
St. George's Hall, Bradford
Saturday 1st March
Starts: 1.45pm
Adjudicator:
Christopher Wormald
The Third Section has over the past 10 years been
a breeding ground for bands that have had high ambitions and plenty
of talent to go all the way. Past winners here have included four
bands that have gone onto the Championship Section – Skelmanthorpe,
Rothwell, Todmorden and Marsden, so could the 2003 winner be plotting
the same path we wonder.
Not to brilliant a record for the qualifiers though when it comes
to the finals of late, with Skelmanthorpe the last National winners
way back in 1993, and before that Drighlington in 1987. Old Silkstone
got 3rd in 1999 and Horbury Victoria came runners up in 2001, but
other than that bands for Yorkshire have failed to make a mark come
the finals.
Christopher Wormald has a difficult task we think separating the
bands this time, but the test piece should be able to separate the
wheat from the chaff easily enough for him to get things spot on.
Last years winners, Hebden Bridge will be looking to make it a
double, whilst Oughtibridge will be keen to go one better than last
years runners up spot. Promoted bands Barnsley and Emley will be
looking to make a mark at the higher level whilst Stanley Newmarket
made the drop from the 2nd Section and will be keen to show they
can more than hold their own. Looks like a good old fashioned hard
old fight for the prizes then.
Barnsley Metropolitan
Conductor: J. Grinnell
Last Year: 6th 4th section (prom)
Last Seven Years:
2002: 6th 4th section (prom)
2001: 3rd 4th section
2000: 5th 4th section
1999: DNC
1998: DNC
1997: DNC
1996: DNC
Promoted up from the 4th section this year, Barnsley have done
well in the past three years and have made good solid progress.
They held their own in the 4th, but may need a bit extrato really
make a mark here. Should be comfortable performers though.
Clifton & Lightcliffe
Conductor: R. Collinson
Last Year: 6th
Last Seven Years:
2002: 6th
2001: Winners 4th Section (prom)
2000: 7th 4th Section
1999: 8th (rel)
1998: 14th
1997: 8th
1996: 7th
Winners of the 4th Section in 2000, Clifton more than held their
own last year and came in the prizes with 6th place. That was an
excellent achievement, but they will be hoping to make sure that
they don’t start dropping away at the is level as they did
somewhat in the last few years they played in this section in 1996
– 1999. That shouldn’t be the case this time we think.
Crofton Silver
Conductor: R. Morgan
Last Year: 8th
Last Seven Years:
2002: 8th
2001: 8th
2000: 6th
1999: 2nd
1998: 13th
1997: 12th
1996: 4th
A solid set of results at this level since 1996 for Crofton and
with a new MD here since last year they will be keen to improve
on the two 8th places of the past two years. Their best was runners
up in 2000 when they went on to the National Finals, so that surely
will be the aim this time around.
Emley Brass
Conductor: M. Robins
Last Year: 2nd 4th Section (prom)
Last Seven Years:
2002: 2nd 4th Section (prom)
2001: 6th 4th Section
2000: DNC
1999: DNC
1998: DNC
1997: 9th 4th Section
1996: 8th 4th Section
Another band with a change of MD this year for Bradford and Emley
will surely be keen to make a mark at the higher level after spending
a few years getting out of the 4th Section. According to our records
the band didn’t compete for a few years, but the last two
has seen something of a rejuvenation of the band and they gained
promotion after coming runners up in the lowest section last time
around.
Gawthorpe Brass '85'
Conductor: J. Edward
Last Year: 9th
Last Seven Years:
2002: 9th
2001: 10th 2nd Section (rel)
2000: 12th 2nd Section
1999: 5th (prom)
1998: 6th
1997: Winners 4th Section (prom)
1996: Winners 4th Section
Gawthorpe had something of a meteoric rise through the sections
up to 2000 after winning the 4th Section title two years in a row
in 1996 and 1997 and then gaining further promotion to the 2nd Section
2000. Reality bit somewhat and they struggled and were relegated
back in 2002 where they regrouped to come 9th. They have shown that
they can do well here though over the years, so don’t write
off their chances of making a mark this time.
Hebden Bridge (Walkley Clogs)
Conductor: I. Craddock
Last Year: Winners
Last Seven Years:
2002: Winners
2001: 10th
2000: 8th
1999: 3rd
1998: 10th
1997: 2nd 4th Section (prom)
1996: N/K
Last years winners will be keen to ensure a repeat performance
of 2002 and take the title for a second year. The band went on to
come 11th at the Nationals so the experience would have benefited
them greatly. Promoted from the 4th section in 1998, they made a
mark by coming 3rd in 1999 before two quiet years made way for last
seasons triumph. Can they do it again?
Maltby Miners Welfare
Conductor: T. Clifford
Last Year: 11th
Last Seven Years:
2002: 11th
2001: 2nd 4th Section (prom)
2000: 6th 4th Section
1999: Winners 4th Section
1998: 8th 4th Section
1997: 8th 4th Section
1996: 9th 4th Section
A band that spent quite a bit of time getting out of the 4th section,
finally made it into the 3rd section last year where they came 11th.
They have the habit of first holding their own and then pushing
for qualification though so they could well improve on last years
result this time around. Winners of the 4th Section 1999, they will
be looking for further success this time around.
Oughtibridge
Conductor: D. Moore
Last Year: 2nd
Last Seven Years:
2002: 2nd
2001: 7th
2000: 2nd 4th Section (prom)
1999: 5th 4th Section
1998: 11th 3rd Section (rel)
1997: 13th 3rd Section
1996: 13th 3rd Section
Runners up last year, Oughtibridge and their MD David Moore went
on to come 15th at the National Finals in Torquay. The band spent
a couple of years in the 4th Section after a few poor years at this
level, but on their return they have improved in both 2001 and 2002.
Will be hoping for more of the same then.
Slaithwaite
Conductor: K. Lever
Last Year: 7th
Last Seven Years:
2002: 7th
2001: 4th
2000: 9th
1999: 9th
1998: 12th
1997: 3rd
1996: 3rd 4th Section (prom)
Another famous old Yorkshire banding name (they have won the Grand
Shield amongst other trophies over the years), Slaithwaite came
7th last year. They were promoted up from the 4th Section in 1997
and since then have more than held their own, with a 3rd in 1997
and 4th in 2001. They dropped off a little last year so they will
be looking for a return to better ways, and a possible challenge
for a podium place at least.
Stanley Newmarket Colliery
Conductor: G. Thompson
Last Year: 12th 2nd Section (rel)
Last Seven Years:
2002: 12th 2nd Section (rel)
2001: 9th 2nd Section
2000: 4th (prom)
1999: 4th
1998: Winners 4th Section (prom)
1997: 4th 4th Section
1996: 6th 4th Section
Stanley Newmarket had something of a rapid rise in recent years
up through the sections, with a win here in the 4th Section in 1998
and further promotion from the 3rd section in 2000. They found life
a touch too hard in the 2nd Section though and returned back down
for this year after coming 9th and then 12th last year at the higher
level. Have shown that they can do well here – two 4th places
in 1999 and 2000, so they will be looking at least to match that.
Wetherby & District
Conductor: G. Kearsley
Last Year: 4th
Last Seven Years:
2002: 4th
2001: 6th
2000: Winners 4th Section (prom)
1999: DNC
1998: 5th 4th Section
1997: 6th 4th Section
1996: 7th 4th Section
Wetherby have really made a mark in recent years here, and with
the exception of 1999 when they didn’t compete they have improved
their results year on year. If that is anything to go by then, this
year could well see them get one of the two qualification places
up for grabs. 4th last year, a podium place at least this time around?

4BR Prediction:
Should be a close run thing but we will put our heads on the old
chopping block and make our prediction. We think a band with a improving
record may be the ones to beat, so it’s Wetherby for us, closely
followed by last years top two, although in reverse order. Oughtibridge
second then with Hebden third.
Behind them it’s a close fight between Clifton and Lightcliffe,
Stanley Newmarket and Slaithwaite with Emley our dark horses.
1. Wetherby and District
2. Oughtibridge
3. Hebden Bridge
4. Clifton and Lightcliffe
5. Stanley Newmarket
6. Slaithwaite
