2003 Norwegian Brass Band Championships

7th and 8th February 2003
Grieg Hall
Bergen

Fourth Division:
Peer Gyntsalen (Smaller concert hall within the Grieg Hall building)

Saturday 8th Feb: 09.00 - 14.00

Competing Bands:

Brumund/Nordaasen Musikkforening

Conductor: Thorbjørn Lunde
Norwegian Ranking: 63
National Record: 2002 – 13th; 2001 – DNC; 2000 – DNC;
Last Year: 13th

The only details we have are that the band came 13th here last here under the direction of J. M. Guldager. They didn’t compete at SIDDIS.

Fitjar Musikklag

Conductor: Torstein Hatlevik
Norwegian Ranking: None
National Record: 2002 – DNC; 2001 – DNC; 2000 – DNC;
Last Year: DNC

All we have on the band is that this is perhaps their first time at the contest and that they came 8th at the SIDDIS contest last year wit the same MD.

Flå Musikkorps

Conductor: Odd Steinar Mørkved
Norwegian Ranking: 87
National Record: 2002 – DNC; 2001 – DNC; 2000 – DNC;
Last Year: DNC

Sorry, but a little bit of a mystery to us – all we know is that they are ranked 87 in Norway.

Førde Musikkorps

Conductor: Pål W. Jøsok
Norwegian Ranking: 61
National Record: 2002 – Joint 16th; 2001 – 10th; 2000 – DNC;
Last Year: Joint 16th

A high ranking for a band in the bottom section, so they have some impressive form against higher ranked bands, including 6th place in the 2nd Division of the SIDDIS contest last year. They came joint 16th last year under the same MD and came 10th the year before.

Grenland Brass

Conductor: Ketil Klingberg
Norwegian Ranking: 37
National Record: 2002 – DNC; 2001 – 14th; 2000 – 11th;
Last Year: DNC

The band didn’t compete last year but the year before they came 14th under the same MD. High ranking though and possibly based on their fine result of coming 6th in the 2nd Division at the SIDDIS contest last year.

Hetlevik Musikklag

Conductor: Svein Magne Olsen
Norwegian Ranking: None
National Record: 2002 – DNC; 2001 – DNC; 2000 – DNC;
Last Year: DNC

Sorry, but we have no information on the band. We think they may be making their debut this year.

Kvikne Hornmusikk

Conductor: Ingrid Øyen
Norwegian Ranking: None
National Record: 2002 – DNC; 2001 – DNC; 2000 – DNC;
Last Year: DNC

Much the same for Kvikne. We have no information on the band, so another making their debut?

Lismarkens musikforening/Mesnali Bygdekorps

Conductor: - Erling Myrseth
Norwegian Ranking: 57
National Record: 2002 – Joint 16th; 2001 – 13th; 2000 – 16th;
Last Year: Joint 16th

Joint 16th last year under the same MD, which was a drop from 13th the year before when they were conducted by Erling Myrseth. The year before they were 16th again, so they will be hoping that the odd years will see anther improvement upwards. The band did not compete at the SIDDIS contest.

Sauda Musikklag

Conductor: Thormod Gilje
Norwegian Ranking: 68
National Record: 2002 – 19th; 2001 – DNC; 2000 – DNC;
Last Year: 19th

The only details we have is that the band played here last year and came 19th under the direction of Thormod Gilje. They did not compete at SIDDIS.

Skui Brass Band

Conductor: Trond Nilsen
Norwegian Ranking: 55
National Record: 2002 – DNC; 2001 – DNC; 2000 – DNC;
Last Year: DNC

Debut this year? The only information we have is that the band came 6th in the 3rd Division of the SIDDIS contest last year.

Tertnes Amatørkorps

Conductor: Tormod R. Flaten
Norwegian Ranking: None
National Record: 2002 – DNC; 2001 – DNC; 2000 – DNC;
Last Year: DNC

By all accounts possibly the band to beat. Tertnes are made up of former players and students and conducted by Eikanger’s brilliant euphonium player. Apart from that, we don’t know anything more.

Ungdomskorpset Samklang

Conductor: Tormod R. Flaten
Norwegian Ranking: 46
National Record: 2002 – 13th; 2001 – DNC; 2000 – DNC;
Last Year: 13th

Came 13th here last year and 7th at SIDDIS in the 3rd Division so a band that has had a year on the circuit and done quite well. According to the programme, the second band to be conducted by Tormod Flaten of Eikanger.
