The
4BR Special Award
2002 Winner:
Frank Hodges
Last year we gave our special award to a very fine writer and journalist
who had, and continues to provide readers of the Brass Band World
Magazine some of the very best articles on the banding world we
have read. Alan Jenkins was a worthy winner and once more we felt
he has again provided our small community with a service second
to none.
However, this year we have awarded our prize to a man who has perhaps
the most thankless job in the banding world, yet who on every occasion
we have talked to him, asked and demanded, cajoled and arm twisted
for information, advice and a touch of guidance has been a paragon
of courtesy, good sense and wry humour. He is also exceptionally
good at his job – and by heck, we don’t know what the
banding world would do without him.
Frank Hodges has brass bands in his blood and brings this sense
of love and understanding to every aspect of his job. He runs the
contests he is control of with a fairness and even-handedness to
all competitors and always listens to requests, demands and even
down right ridiculous questions with a smile and respect to all
those who are asking (usually the impossible). All this and he even
has time to play a few bars himself in his own band.
We have seen him at work at the British Open, Pontins, The Nationals,
Regional Contests, Grand Shield and even the ill fated Lower Section
National Finals in Torquay in his capacity as Contest Controller
par excellence. If you wonder how contests get to be run, ask Frank
and he will tell you – it is hard, but rewarding work.
So our Special Award this year goes to Frank – congratulations
to a very nice bloke, and man who is the best in the business. Players
and MD’s may not even give him a second glance, but in the
big picture of things, he is a very important man indeed and has
been a stalwart of the banding movement in the past 12 months.
