Third Section:
Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre
Saturday March 16th
Adjudicator: Roy Sparkes
Commences: 10.30am
Competing
Bands: Amersham (A. Fawbert): Bradwell Silver (B. Keech): Castleton
Brass (D. Eves): Chinnor Silver (D. Pegram): Croyden Brass (M. Hackett): East
London Brass (A. Caldon): Heath (D. Phillips): St. Albans City (W. Rumford): St.
Sebastian's Wokingham (B. Gentry): Stantonbury Brass (J. Jenkin): Yiewsley and
West Drayton (C. Cole) 13 of the best line up for a bash of the "St
Austell Suite" and the contest to try and get one of the two qualifying spots
on offer for Torquay. Some real decent hard working bands in this section will
ensure a close run contest and something for Roy Sparkes to enjoy. Tow bands up
from the Fourth Section and one down from the second add to the mix and it will
be interesting to see if any of the qualifiers can go on and make a mark in Torquay
later in the year.
Amersham come up to the section this year after gaining promotion
on the back of 3rd in the 4th section in 2000 when they qualifyed
for the the Finals and 4th last year. They came 3rd at the Folkestone
contest last year and we understand that this is the first time
they've competed in third section.
Bradwell Silver came
13th last year and 15th the year before after gaining promotion from the fourth
section in 1998 following two consecutive 6th places, whilst Castleton Brass were
7th here last year, although we don't have any information about the band for
the years prior to this. Chinnor Silver won the Harrow contest last year
and came 10th at this contest. That followed their relegation from the second
section where they had come 14th, 12th and 15th in the previous three years. Croydon
Brass won promotion to this section following two consecutive 4th places in 1998
and 1999 in the lower section and they came 10th at both the Hove and Folkestone
contests. They were 12th here in 2000 and 16th last year. East London Brass
are a little bit of a mystery to us as we couldn't find a record of them competing
at the contest in the past the three years, but they were 9th at the Folkestone
contest in the second section. Heath meanwhile have been steady performers here
and came 14th last year to follow up on their consecutive 11th places of 2000
and 1999 following their relegation from the second section after coming 12th
in 1998. Hitchin are a band that has been used to competing at a higher level
and they had three years in the second section before they dropped down here last
year. 9th, 15th and 13th at that level cost them their place, but they were more
secure here last year and came home 9th. KM Gillingham Concert Brass won
the Folkestone contest and came 2nd at Hove last year, as well as securing 12th
place here. This followed a series since 1998 of 7th, 4th and 14th. St. Albans
meanwhile came up from the fourth section last year following a series of results
since 1998 that read 8th, 3rd and 13th. They were comfortable enough last year
though and came home 8th. St. Sebastian's Wokingham wee also promoted up last
year and secured 15th spot. That was gained after two years in the lowest section
in 1999 and 2000 when they came 2nd each time. They were 9th at the Hove contest
in the second section last year. Stantonbury Brass were relegated to this
section following three years in the second tier that saw them come home 8th,
13th and 16th. 4th place here last year showed that they could well be inline
for a quick return back. Finally, Yiewsley and West Drayton are making their debut
here following promotion on the back of three years when they came 5th, 15th and
7th in the lowest section. They also came 2nd at the Folkestone contest and won
at Hove.
