The Grand Shield Contest or Spring Belle Vue as it is more commonly known, was instituted in 1921 as the qualifying contest for the British Open Brass Band Championships later in the same year. The Senior Cup Contest was initiated in 1932, when the Spring Belle Vue Festival was split to accommodate the numerous bands that competed. The Senior Trophy Contest was resurected in 2002.
