Did you know?

The Contest was started in 1977 and has attracted nearly all the best bands in the country to Spennymoor in County Durham for the Annual Entertainment Contest.

The first winners were Grimethorpe Colliery Band conducted by Fred Partlett, and over the years bands have tried numerous different effects, comedy, new works, transcriptions, vocalists and even dancers in attempts to win the first prize. Bands as far afield as Scandinavia have played at the contest.

In recent years many bands have stopped attending due to the near complete exhaustion of the repertoire and “dumbing down” effect of visual entertainment. It remains however, the premier entertainment contest in the country.
