Having to work on 13x22 minute shows is the equivalent of working on two feature films!"

He added: "One episode entitled ‘Snoozical’ see’s the star of the show Becky, fall into a deep sleep during her music lesson and drift off into this dream-like musical. I had to compose several songs for this episode for the cast to sing, including a full scale finale for over 40 voices.

It was a surreal experience having the likes of John Thompson and Caroline Aherne in my recording studio singing away only to apologies profusely when I asked them to re-take a line because they sang out of tune slightly!"

Atlanta and LA

Not all the actors were available for certain recording sessions, with Richard Ayoade filming in Atlanta with Ben Stiller on his latest film ‘The Watch’, so Paul was faced with a tricky situation.

"We had to link up to a recording studio live in Atlanta where I directed him from our studios in Altricham," he continued. "His vocals were recorded there and broadcast to us via ISDN for my immediate approval."

Paul worked closely with Head Writer and Showrunner Josh Weinstein, who is based in Los Angeles.

"Working with Josh has been a fantastic experience. When we received each new episode that was ready for the music score he would give great direction as to where he wanted the music to go and what sort of a feel or emotion he wanted to develop in each scene.

It really helped me to develop my composing style for this type of medium."

Pleasure

Speaking about the music Josh Weinstein added: "It was a genuine pleasure working with Paul. I love his music."

Paul is the Director of Music for Factory Transmedia which is one of the co-producing companies of the show.

Chalk

Factory TM’s Managing Director is Phil Chalk, former assistant principal cornet and conductor of Faireys. He is also the Producer of Strange Hill High.

Phil commented: "It was a big undertaking to set up the shooting of Strange - it is a huge show.

We needed sets that were elevated 6ft high to accommodate all the puppeteers who operated the puppets from underneath the sets. There was a lot of work implementing the stop-motion animation and computer generated imagery into the scenes also.

All in all, the finished product is thirteen episodes that have a fantastic look and feel about them. Each episode is a ‘mini movie’, from the set design, to the acting, puppetry and even the music everything has worked to perfection."

Topping the ratings

The show has become a major hit with the first two episodes having already aired and are leading in the latest viewing figures. The second series has been commissioned and is in full production.

You can watch Strange Hill High on CBBC every Wednesday at 5.00pm with repeats on Saturdays at 11.00am.

You can also watch Strange Hill High on BBC’s iPlayer and by visiting the website http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/shows/strange-hill-high

White & Newton lead Medway memories

The music of composer Rodney Newton provided the backdrop to a fine evening of music making in Medway.

The Medway Town Band organisation recently performed their first Patrons' Concert featuring their main senior outfit conducted by Melvin White and Medway Concert, directed by John Campbell, with guest trombone soloist Susan White and special guest, composer Rodney Newton.

Memory

The Medway Band's programme included six items composed by Rodney, including the English premiere of his 'Three Burns Portraits' written for, and performed by Susan in memory of her mother Maureen Cordiner.

Melvin and Rodney provided the background as to how the short trombone solo requested, turned into the major three movement work produced!

Tour de force

As one delighted audience member later told 4BR: "It was certainly a 'tour de force' for trombone, which displayed Susan's scintillating technique and beautiful melodious playing."

Meanwhile, the band's Scottish born solo horn player remarked; "From someone who's grown up in the middle of Ayrshire, I think Rodney Newton's ‘Three Burns Portraits’ was spot on."

Turpin

Susan also performed Rodney's, ‘'Dick Turpin's Ride to York' and Kevin Kay-Bradley performed his flugel solo, ‘Dimitri’. Other items included Rodney's wonderfully evocative 'King Solomon's Mines' and his arrangement of 'Gaudete'.

Rodney was also invited to conduct the massed bands in what he announced as the first ever performance of his early work, 'Range Rider'.

Finale

An appreciative audience were treated to a finale of the Introduction to Act III, ‘Lohengrin’ before being sent on their way with a promise that this was the first of what will be an annual event.

Harry's winning game

13 year old Harry Lear is leading Leicestershire Co-operative band to success.

The Leicestershire Co-op Band certainly enjoyed their trip to the seaside on the weekend where they claimed second place in the top section at the Weston Super Mare contest.

Best Cornet

The result was also boosted by the news that their 13 year old principal cornet player Harry Lear, claimed the ‘Best Cornet Player’ award for his contribution on their own choice selection of ‘Royal Parks’ by George Lloyd.

"This is a twelve year journey that has taken us from the depths of the Fourth Section to be competitive at the top level", explained MD, Graham Jacklin.

"The band is still improving and never look back, no matter how tough the opposition. After our promotion to the First Section in 2012, we knew we were in for a tough time, but our team ethics are built on hard work and that's exactly our approach to improvement. All our members are committed and that's what makes our community band so enjoyable."

Bonus

He added: "The bonus of seeing Harry make such a wonderful mark shows our commitment to younger players. As a band we love to give them as much opportunity as we can and Harry's a great player already.

He has no fear and you only have to ask him once and he responds immediately. In between Les will be the featured soloist in a concert on the Saturday night.

Rebuilding

The event comes as a result of over two and half years of solid rebuilding for the Galashiels organisation, as MD Stuart Black told 4BR: "Around 3 years ago the band was sitting with around 5 players and not doing a huge amount. Since then a huge amount of work and commitment has seen both young and old players grow in enthusiasm and ability, and to now be putting our first concert on our own with only our three bands being used is a great milestone.

It’s a huge credit to the hard work by the players and the phenomenal committee we have working here."

Passion

He continued: "I have worked with Les a couple of times now and his passion and enthusiasm for what he does is inspiring.

I’m sure the weekend will prove to be equally inspiring for the players and for the audience at the concert."

Results: 2013 NEMBBA Junior Solo, Duet & Quartet Contest

There were plenty of rising young stars on show at South Normanton on the weekend.

The rising stars of Midlands banding strutted their musical stuff at the Post Mill Centre, South Normanton in Derbyshire on the weekend, much to the delight of the audience and adjudicator Sharon Stansfield

Results:

10 & Under Slow Melody:
1. The standard of competition playing was very good, with the bands having to play Wilfred Heaton’s ‘Passing By’ as a form of set work.

The materclasses provided by the adjudication team were well attended by eager students too—and that was after a wonderful late night party that everyone enjoyed!"

Impressed

Huw Thomas was also impressed by the set up that encouraged an inclusive atmosphere of friendly competitiveness.

"It was great to be a part of such an inventive contest set up. We even had a superb singer as a featured soloist with the B Section winners who delivered a belting rendition of ‘Skyfall’ that Adele would have been proud of!"

He added: "Everyone wanted to enjoy themselves, but also learn something from the experience—with the masterclasses on the Sunday morning a real treat to be part of."

Copy

Russell Gray was also impressed by the enthusiasm. "My conducting masterclass was one of the best I’ve been part of—and summed up the whole event: There is a bit of blueprint here for others over the banding world to try and copy."

Father

There was also a lovely touch this year with a prize given by Scandinavian Brass and Woodwind in memory of the great ‘father of Danish brass banding’, Herbert Møller. The first winner was Gunnar La Cour.

Winners

The eventual Section A winners were Skanderborg Brass Band conducted by Gert Skovlod Hattesen, who opened with the march, ‘Knight Templar’, followed by ‘Strike up the Band’ and the set work ‘Passing By’.

They followed this with ‘The Children of Sanchez’ featuring best soloist winner, Svend Lykkegaard, before finishing with ‘La Danza’.
Organiser Henrik Juul-Pedersen, later told 4BR it was hoped that in the next few years the contest will develop to include the elite bands in Norway and from the rest of Scandinavia.

"We are very pleased with the contest this year, and it would be great if we can now increase the scope of the event to include the elite Danish bands and perhaps even some from other parts of Scandinavia and maybe even the UK."

Results:

Section A:
1. Their boldly coloured rendition of ‘John O’Gaunt’ also drew praise from adjudicator John Maines.

“There were some well chosen works on display today, and some fine playing,” he said. “The winner’s though just had that little bit of extra control and quality to make the difference.”

The Third Section nationally graded RAF St Athan showed that they are becoming a force to reckon with by coming second on their well chosen ‘Five Blooms in a Welsh Garden’, thanks in no small part to the excellent playing of Claire Bourne who won the TWW Trophy as Best Instrumentalist.

The 'Best Soprano' award was won by Andy Watkins of Blaenavon.

In what turned out to be a closely fought contest, Lewis Merthyr took third with their solid rendition of ‘Land of the Long White Cloud’.

Lucinda Gough, principal cornet of fourth placed Blaenavon Town took the ‘Best Instrumentalist’ award for her playing on ‘The Plantagenets’.

Second Section:

Ian Porthouse had eight own choice performances to compare and contrast in the Second Section—although as he later stated, it was not the pieces that he was looking to judge, but the quality of the playing.

“There were some interesting choices today—and some interesting playing playing too,” he said.

“Two bands stood out, but lost points with some poor muted tuning, whilst the others just needed to concentrate more on the rhythmic pulse of the music. It certainly made for a close contest.”

In the end it was reigning Welsh League champion Goodwick who added the Haydn Evans Memorial Trophy to the Welsh Area title they won in Swansea, thanks to a polished reprise of ‘The Plantagenets’ under the baton of Matthew Jenkins.

One of their inexhaustible supply of talented youngsters, 14 year old tenor horn player Geraint Harris, won the Will Wood Award as ‘Best Instrumentalist’.

Parc & Dare’s welcome recent return to Welsh contesting life saw them add a second place finish to their 2013 CV with a solidly portrayed account of ‘Symphonic Suite for Brass Band’. Crwbin put behind them their disappointing Swansea result by claiming a well deserved podium finish thanks to their rendition of ‘Music for a Festival’.

Third Section:

There was a first Welsh League contesting success with the baton for Cory’s trombone player Gareth Robinson in the Third Section, as he led Upper Rhondda to victory with a purposeful account of ‘A Saddleworth Festival Overture’.

It proved to be just enough to pip rivals Thomas Coaches Mid Rhondda, who continued their return to contesting strength by coming second on ‘Kaleidoscope’. Flugel player Jayne Moxon claimed the Colin White Trophy as ‘Best Instrumentalist’.

Third place went to Ogmore Valley who performed ‘Olympus’, whilst the ‘Best Euphonium’ Award went to John Ayres of fourth placed Severn Tunnel.

Fourth Section:

Reigning Welsh League champion Ebbw Valley continued their excellent 2013 form by adding the Fourth Section honours to the Welsh Regional title they won in Swansea.

Their commanding performance of ‘Kaleidoscope’ off the number 1 draw saw them take the Toby Trophy by a three point margin, with principal cornet player Nanette Jones also claiming the ‘Best Instrumentalist’ Award.

Usk Brass continued their good run of form by coming second thanks to a well delivered rendition of ‘A Lindum Suite’, with Newport Borough ending third playing ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’.

Adjudicator Ian Porthouse was full of praise for the winners, but did warn some MDs that they had to be careful not to pick choices that were perhaps a bit too ambitious for their bands.

“Congratulations to the winners and the MD. They really were a fine example of a very good Fourth Section band—excellently prepared on a piece they could play very well.”

Junior Section:

There was further encouragement for Welsh banding with five ensembles taking part in the Junior Section.

Each band provided adjudicator John Maines with a 15 minute programme to evaluate, with BTM New Generation, City of Cardiff M3 and Cwmtawe gaining Gold Awards, with Blaenavon Town and City of Cardiff M4, Silver Awards.

John told the audience: “Seeing these bands perform today is such good news not just for Wales, but for British and world banding too. One band had a 5 year old playing bass drum with such enjoyment! It was great to see and I must congratulate all the MDs and the players for their efforts.”

Rising star 16 year old Ryan Brown claimed the ‘Best Instrumentalist’ Award for his fine playing with Blaenavon with the talented team from City of Cardiff M3 taking the ‘Best Percussion’ Award.

The little 5 year old in question was Megan Jones of Ebbw Valley.

At the other end of the banding scale there were Lifetime Membership Awards for Darryl Preece and Janet Jones who between them have contributed 97 years of dedicated service to Blaenavon Town Band.

Results:

Championship Section:
Adjudicator: Ian Porthouse

1.
