We are proud and happy to have the first brass band in Peru and we will keep working to develop it and perhaps others with his inspirational lead."

Explaining

Over the four days Patricio led the participants in different aspects of brass band ensemble playing, intonation, articulation, effects and quality of sound.

"Part of what I had to do was to explain just what brass bands were all about — and what musical opportunities they have to offer players," he said. "Some people knew more than others, but the appetite to understand and explore was incredible."

Part of the exploratory process was to listen each night to a number of brass band CD recordings and videos — including those from Brass in Concert and even watch the film 'Brassed Off!"

Serious and fun

"We balanced the serious and the fun," Patricio added.

"I wanted to give everyone an idea of not just what brass bands can do, but how we are sometimes portrayed. It was the same with the music we played — from 'Prismatic Light' and 'The Floral Dance' to looking at a couple of test-pieces. The players wanted to experience it all!"

One player who was an instant fan was Gustavo Ramirez Davalos, who became the band's first principal cornet. He told 4BR: "It is the first time in my life that I sit in this position.

It is a big challenge that I like to take, but also I can feel the pressure in leading the players. It is very exciting."

Concert

The four day course was rounded off with a short concert which attracted many interested people from the music school as well as members of the public intrigued to hear a traditional British style brass band perform.

Such was the success (which included two encores) that the Music School invited Patricio to become its International MD of the newly named Brass Band Tempo.

Honoured

"I feel very honoured to bring brass bands to new frontiers," he said. "Since I started conducting Brass Band BlachKLAND in 2015, I have become a huge fan of brass bands and have always wanted to make a mark in bringing its joys to other people.

I'm so happy that this connection is working and now we must try to bring brass bands to the rest of South America!"

4BR Quiz: A colourful little brain tickler

Can you can tell us the link between Gilbert Vinter, Sir Clive Sinclair and Captain Scarlet..?

<img src="https://www.4barsrest.com/gallery/ib/2019/Scarlet-1646818689.jpg" alt="Captain Scarlet " As a result they miss out on important benefits: a sense of belonging, increased confidence and social skills which are invaluable to employers. It is high time to level the playing field."

Heartbreaking

Meanwhile, under the newspaper strap-line heading; "Condemning poor children to a life without culture is a form of cruelty", Barbara Ellen wrote that she found the findings "heartbreaking".

She wrote: "It's hardly news that life is tougher for poorer children, but it's an outrage if all sense of curiosity, artistry and playfulness is knocked out of them so early.

The result is full-blown structural elitism: one set of kids grows and thrives, the other is diverted on to a culturally sterile treadmill they could stay on for life.

It's about sowing the seeds for a cultural hinterland that will sustain and enrich them for life."

Recommendations

In its report the Commission sets out four key recommendations for the government, voluntary groups and schools, including the introduction of a national extra-curricular bursary scheme for disadvantaged families as well as provide funding to develop and extend voluntary sector initiatives which allow access to activities.

It also recommends that the capacity of schools is increased to provide extra-curricular activities and provide extra information and that there must be an improvement in data collection with further research into soft skill development

Report

The report can be accessed at:
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/818679/An_Unequal_Playing_Field_report.pdf

The Observer article:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jul/20/condemning-poor-children-to-a-life-without-culture-is-a-form-of-cruelty

All roads lead to Bolsover for Summer School attractions

Steven Mead will be leading 55 delegates from around the world in a week of great music making at the Bolsover International Brass Band Summer School.

<img src="https://www.4barsrest.com/gallery/ib/2018/Bolsover-369246115.jpg.png" alt="Bolsover" title="Bolsover" />
55 players from around the world are heading to Derbyshire today for the start of the annual Bolsover International Brass Band Summer School, led by Besson artist and Course Director Stephen Mead.

There is a full diary of work to await them too, although there will also be time to enjoy visiting the many attractions the area has to offer.

Highlights

Two highlights are sure to be the free Tutors Concert at Clowne Community Centre on Wednesday 24th July (7.00pm), where Steve will be joined by his colleagues for a great night of showcase music from the likes of Mark Wilkinson, Chris Thomas and Steve himself, as well as the free Course Concert on Friday evening (7.00pm).

After leading the highly successful 2018 event, Stephen is once again raring to go, and told 4BR: "I'm really looking forward to this year's course. It's a privilege to be back conducting them and to be part of such performances.

The players worked incredibly hard in the build up and we're thrilled to be taking the trophies back to our Ngaio bandroom."

He added: "A special mention must go to all our principals, in particular Toby Pringle who also won the 'Champion of Champions' solo title on the weekend and our 'Best Section' tubas. The celebrations as you can imagine, were long and fun!"

Defined order

Victory further endorsed Wellington as the pre-eminent brass band in the southern hemisphere, leading home rivals Woolston Brass and podium finishers North Shore Brass in what was a clearly defined order of preference from adjudicator Luc Vertommen.

Before the announcement of the results the Belgian made a generous speech; acknowledging not just the playing of the bands, but also the contribution of the National and local organising committees to what proved to be a highly successful National return to Hamilton for the first time since 1979.

And although he complained (with tongue firmly in his cheek) that having read so much about New Zealand being the best place in the world to visit he had spent the vast majority of his time in the country inside an adjudicator's box, he was still fulsome in his praise for the standard of playing he had heard in the solo and ensemble events as well as the main band competitions.

Salt, pepper, mustard and ketchup

He did feel though that only four bands really captured Gilbert Vinter's precise musical intentions on 'Variations on a Ninth' — stating that conductors that tried to "overdo" tempi and dynamics on the "classical masterpiece" found that "it just didn't work".

"It was like putting extra salt, pepper, mustard and ketchup on an excellent dish", he said.

He added: "Those who did what the composer asked for, and that was what I was looking for, scored well. It is still a very difficult test for modern bands. Not even all the top four could play Variations 1 and 8, but there was one band that clearly stood out and ticked all the boxes.

They had minor blemishes but I felt they played with good taste and probably laid the foundations for winning the title today."

And in respect to the own-choice selections he revealed that he knew the pitfalls the scores contained having conducted 10 of the 11 himself. "There were 11 top class performances," he said. "Today was a big feast of modern test pieces."

Significant margin

A glance at the overall results later confirmed that Wellington had perhaps sealed their victory on the Friday in leading rivals Woolston and North Shore Brass by a small, but significant margin ahead of the own-choice finale.

There they produced a dramatic account of 'Titan's Progress' off the number 1 draw at the Claudelands Event Centre, that despite high-quality efforts from Woolston on 'A Brussels Requiem' and North Shore on 'Fraternity' (with guest principal cornet Harmen Vanhoorne claiming his second 'Best Principal Cornet' prize) proved more than good enough to seal yet another National success.

Behind them in a contest of varying top flight quality came solid accounts from Waitakere Auckland Brass (who also impressed with their set-work rendition) playing 'On the Shoulders of Giants', Eastern Bay of Plenty and welcome USA visitors, Chicago Brass Band — the latter duo perhaps more at home with their own-choice selections of 'Fraternity' and 'Trance'.

The decision to use Gilbert Vinter's 1964 composition in commemoration of the 50 anniversary of his death proved to be something of an inspired choice — with both MDs and players faced with somewhat unfamiliar tests of musical character in terms of pacing, dynamic and balance (something Luc Vertommen touched on),

The famous set of cadenzas certainly tested the players, with Anthony Smith of Woolston Brass deservedly taking the Elgar Clayton Memorial Trophy for his fine playing.

B Grade:

In the B Grade, one of New Zealand's fast rising ensembles, Nelson City Brass claimed an equally comprehensive victory — enabling MD Nigel Weeks to celebrate the recent announcement of his award of the Queen's Service Medal by leading them to a third National title in the last four years.

The 2018 runner-up secured victory by a massive 11-point margin over rivals, Boroondara Brass and joint third placed Auckland City Brass and defending champion Whanganui, with mature renditions of 'I Know Thou Art Mine', the set-work, 'Triumphant Rhapsody' and 'Prisms'.

C , D and Youth Grade:

There was also a clear victory in the C Grade event for Tauranga City Brass led by conductor Steven Thompson, as they secured their first National win since 2006 with well-structured accounts of 'Guardian of My Soul', 'Penlee' and 'Elegy 1'.

Behind them came defending champion Howick Brass with 2014 winner Te Awamutu Brass in third.

In a highly enjoyable D Grade event (one in which adjudicator Graham Hickman was full of insightful analysis and praise for the individual performers) it was a welcome return for Matamata Brass led by Barry Cullen (they did not compete in 2017 or 2018).

They secured their first win since 2013 with fine renditions of the difficult set-test, 'Meditation on St Clement' as well as 'Music for a Festival' and 'Jack o'Lantern'.

Behind them came well delivered performances from Hamilton Auxiliary Brass, also on their return to the event since 2013 and debutants North Shore Brass Academy alongside Rotorua Brass.

Although there was only one band in the Youth Grade, the audience at the Southwell School Performing Arts Centre thoroughly enjoyed the fine playing of Takapuna Youth Band led by Mark Close, especially on 'The Once and Future King' and 'Riffs & Whirligigs'.

The return of the National Championships to Hamilton for just the second time in the 139 year history of the event proved to be an overwhelming success, with the outstanding organisation and slick presentation mirrored by the increased turn-out of competitors and the warm welcome of the host city.

Results:

A Grade:

Adjudicator: Luc Vertommen
Sacred Item/Set-Work/Own-Choice = Total

1. "It was a very difficult task sorting out all those champions. Some created special musical moments. There were some real artists."

There was a great deal of accomplished playing on show from each of the finalists — with the likes of experienced baritone and horn champions Steven Booth and Mike Ford and former champion and percussion champion Rachel Thomas making their mark with many in the auditorium.

Great potential

And whilst Luc Vertommen went on to say that there were noticeable mistakes and issues with tuning, he felt that the winner also showed "great potential for the future."

Bass trombonist Liam Bewley was presented with the Pat Cole Medal as the youngest winner of a senior individual solo category, whilst Rachel Thomas and Jamie Rolfe shared award for gaining the highest score of female competitors on their categories.

Earlier in the day the Junior Champion of Champions title was claimed by the excellent young cornet star Liam Wright from North Shore Brass, whilst the Invitation Slow Melody went to Chris Lawrence of Eastern Bay of Plenty Brass.

Results:

Champion of Champions:

1. The set-work is Gilbert Vinter's classic 'Variations on a Ninth'.

Bands from far and wide

The B Grade event (held alongside the D and Youth events at the Southwell School Performing Arts Centre) is also an international event, with ten bands competing including Boroondara Brass from Victoria. The defending champion is Brass Whanganui. The set-work is Gilbert Vinter's 'Triumphant Rhapsody'.

Meanwhile, the C Grade competition looks like being a keenly contested local affair with the majority of the five bands coming from Waikato and Auckland. Hoping to unsettle the locals though is Feilding Brass travelling from the Manawatu to its first national contest since 2013. The set-work is Simon Dobson's 'Penlee'.

Four bands from Waikato and Auckland will compete in the D Grade, with the welcome news of the debut National appearance North Shore Brass Academy, whose Takapuna Youth Brass will also take part in the Youth Grade. The D Grade set-work is 'Meditation on St Clement' by David Chaulk.

Already underway

The contest week has already got underway with the hard fought Junior Solos and Open Ensembles on Wednesday 12th July at the Claudelands Event Centre, the highlight of which was the Junior Champion of Champions competition.

There is also sure to be keen interest in the prestigious Invitation Slow Melody — won over the years by some of the finest players in New Zealand banding.

This year's competitors are Steven Booth, Lachlan Spence, Luke Christensen, Mason Elliot, Phil Johnston and Byron Newton, as well as the 2018 winner Jaime Rolfe from Brisbane XLCR, Chris Lawrence and Murray Borthwick. The final place goes to the winner of the Open Slow Melody event held earlier in the day.

The Open Solo and Junior ensemble events will get underway on Thursday and conclude in the evening with the Open Champion of Champions event.

Tests and own choice

Friday sees the Sacred/Reflective Item and Test Selection events. The foyer of Claudelands Event Centre will be given over to trade stands so there will be plenty of shiny new instruments and accessories to keep everyone interested between bands.

As well as giving their best on stage, on the Friday bands will also be putting their best foot forward in the Parade of Bands along the streets of central Hamilton.

The competition events culminate on Saturday with bands from all grades performing their Own-Choice selections, whilst the weekend is rounded off on Sunday 14th July with a concert event Brass In Concert from 1.00pm featuring Chicago Brass Band, Hamilton City Brass and guest soloists.

Live broadcast

You can check out the action as it happens too from our friends at www.brassbanned.com hosted by the inimitable Tim Kelly.

Competing bands:

A Grade:

Adjudicator: Luc Vertommen
Set Work: Variations on a Ninth (Gilbert Vinter) plus Own Choice and Sacred Item

Ascot Park Hotel Brass of Invercargill (Matthew Dick)
Chicago Brass Band (Colin Holman)
Eastern Bay of Plenty Brass (Alan Spence)
Hamilton City Brass (Glenn Richards)
Leopard Coachlines Canterbury Brass (Nathaniel Griffiths)
Marlborough District Brass (Kevin Moseley)
North Shore Brass (Colin Clark)
St Kilda Brass (Peter Adams)
Waitakere Auckland Brass (Howard Taylor)
Wellington Brass (David Bremner)
Woolston Brass (Tyme Marsters)

B Grade:

Adjudicator: Graham Hickman
Set Work: Triumphant Rhapsody (Gilbert Vinter) plus Own Choice and Sacred Item

Auckland City Brass (Tak Chun Lai)
Boroondara Brass (Daniel Van Bergan)
Brass Whanganui (Bruce Jellyman)
Deco Bay Brass (David Mass)
Hutt City Brass (Matt Stein)
Kaikorai Metropolitan Brass (Michael Grant)
Nelson City Brass (Nigel Weeks)
Papakura City Brass (Adrian Raven)
The Devon Hotel New Plymouth Brass (Christopher Luke)
Trust Porirua City Brass (Clynton Payne)

C Grade:

Adjudicator: Luc Vertommen
Set Work: Penlee (Simpon Dobson) plus Own-Choice and Sacred Item

Cambridge Brass (Rob Hocking)
Feilding Brass (Carissa Davies)
Howick Brass (Brendan Agnew)
Tauranga City Brass (Steven Thompson)
Te Awamutu Brass (Sarah Carroll)

D Grade:

Adjudicator: Graham Hickman
Set Work: Meditation on St Clement (David Chaulk) and Own Choice

Hamilton Auxiliary Brass (TeReo Hughes)
Matamata Brass (Barry Cullen)
North Shore Brass Academy (Steve Foster)
Rotorua Brass (Jim McGregor)

Youth Grade:

Adjudicator: Graham Hickman
Own Choice

Takapuna Youth Brass (Mark Close)

Buzz off after New Zealand Nationals

Byron Newton will make his final appearance with defending champion Wellington Brass at the forthcoming New Zealand National Championships.

<img src="https://www.4barsrest.com/gallery/ib/2018/newton-1961643597.jpg" alt="Byron Newton" title="Byron Newton" />
4BR has been informed that after nearly a decade as principal euphonium with Wellington Brass, Byron Newton has decided to step away from the role.

'Buzz' as he is known throughout the banding world will step down from the role with the current National Champion following the upcoming New Zealand National Championships which start in Hamilton this week.

Right time

Speaking to 4BR he said: "The time feels right to step aside and to focus on family. Wellington Brass deserves 100% commitment throughout the year which I've been unable to achieve over the past year since becoming a father.

The band has been a huge part of my life, with many highs such as five New Zealand National titles, doing the Austrliasian 'Double' in 2015 and 2018, as well as memorable events such as the Wellington Oktoberfest, the British Open tour in 2016, and a host of fantastic concerts and projects."

Tough decision

He added: "It has been an extremely tough decision, but one I hope will be mutually beneficial to both me and the band.
