Richard MarshallMarshall delight at Dyke job

22-Dec-2005
Richard Marshall has spoken to 4BR at his delight at his new appointment at Black Dyke.

Richard Marshall has spoken to 4BR about his delight at his appointment as the new Principal Cornet of the Black Dyke Band and of his wishes to embark on a long and fruitful career with the band.

The 29 year old from Doncaster was undeniably thrilled when he spoke. “I’m really over the moon,” he said. “I have had a wonderful 10 years at Grimethorpe and I must take the opportunity to thank everyone there for what they have done for me in the past ten years. I leave with wonderful memories and wonderful friends and I can’t thank them enough for the way in which they have helped me develop as a player.”

'I am looking forward to playing under Nicholas Childs and with Black Dyke, especially as they have a very full concert and recording schedule and a great contesting record to defend and enhance in 2006'

~ Richard Marshall

Some of those memories has seen Richard perform all over the world, including Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall as well countless other tours venues, recordings, concerts and contests—including an unprecedented six wins with Grimey at Brass in Concert.

Wrench to leave Grimethorpe

”It is a great wrench to leave Grimethorpre after such a period of time but I believe this is a significant step forward for me as a performer and player. I am looking forward to playing under Nicholas Childs and with Black Dyke, especially as they have a very full concert and recording schedule and a great contesting record to defend and enhance in 2006.”

Icons and Heroes

The move also means that Richard becomes the latest top cornet player to occupy the most famous seat in banding and it is something he is well aware of. “It is going to be a great challenge for me especially as I am fully aware of the great players who have occupied the seat at Black Dyke over the years. Many of these are icons and particular heroes of mine such as Roger, Philip McCann, Jim Shepherd and Maurice Murphy. It is a great honour to follow in their, and others footsteps and I hope to be able to make my own bit of Black Dyke history as well in what I hope will be a very long stay.”
