The acclaimed RNCM 'In Focus' series will feature the work of British composer Tansy Davies.

The work of British composer Tansy Davis will be brought into focus at the RNCM later this month.

The Royal Northern College of Music has announced that its critically acclaimed 'In Focus' series, that delves in to the music and minds of current British composers, continues this Autumn with the music of Tansy Davies.

Jolts and pulses

The series has already featured both Colin Matthews and Robert Saxton, and on the 27th/28th October it will be the turn of Tansy Davies, whose work is known for its jolts and pulses with a rhythmical, almost mechanical edge.

A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Royal Holloway, the multi award-winning composer has written works for numerous world-class ensembles and orchestras, including the London Sinfonietta, CBSO Youth Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia and BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Architecture

Often drawing inspiration from architecture, she uses the orchestra to build her structures to create new worlds that bridge contemporary music and more classical idioms.

The event includes an hour-long Festival Intro (27th October, 11.30am) where the composer will discuss her music alongside live performances by RNCM students, as well as a concert by the RNCM New Ensemble featuring 'Iris' for soprano saxophone and ensemble (27th October, 1.15pm).

Evening concert

In addition there will be an evening concert by the BBC Philharmonic at the University of Salford (27th October, 7.30pm) where the programme includes 'Residuum', 'Falling Angel' and 'Spine' as well as a Q&A session, and a percussion-based Lunchtime Concert featuring 'Troubairitz' for soprano and percussion and 'Dark Ground' for solo percussion (28th October, 1.15pm).

Concerts also include new works by RNCM student composers Michael Brailey, Carmel Smickersgill and Amir Sadeghi Konjani.

All events are free to the public.
