David was born in Senghenydd, South Wales, but moved to Yorkshire at a very early age,where he commenced his career as a cornet player with the Askern Colliery Band, South Yorkshire. eventually joining the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band. From Carlton Main he joined Munn and Felton’s Band - later called GUS Footwear Band, - in due course becoming their Principal Solo Cornet Player, during his period with them the band won four National Championships and a World Championship at the Royal Albert Hall.

He was also a member of Harry Mortimer’s All Star Brass and during Military service the Regimental Band of The Welsh Guards. He was the Assistant Principal Solo Cornet Player of the Virtuosi Band of Great Britain and a member of the Kings of Brass.

He was the Champion Cornet Player of Great Britain three times and once outright Solo Champion. David was a member of the famous G.U.S.(Footwear) Quartet which achieved the hat trick of wins in the Great Britain Championship and has ensured his place as one of Britain’ s best cornet players. David concentrated his efforts on teaching and was for many years the Senior Instrumental Teacher for the Cambridge Area Education Authority where he conducted his youth bands to 5 National Youth Band Finals.

He conducted the Cambridge Co-operative Band for nearly fifteen years, having great success, including broadcasting regularly on BBC Radio 2 and Radio 3, appearing in the Championship Section Finals, at the Royal Albert Hall, the Finals of the Pontins Brass Band Festival, winning the Southern Counties Championship in Folkestone and appearing on BBC Television ‘Best of Brass’ series.

David is one of the worlds leading brass band adjudicators and as such is invited to adjudicate at all the major band contests throughout Gt. Britain ,Europe, Australia and the U.S.A. which also includes a total of 50 appearances at the National Finals in the Royal Albert Hall, London, The British Open , The All England International Masters and the World Brass Band Championships in Kerkrade, Holland.

In 1983 he was honoured by the Worshipful Company of Musicians who presented him with the Isle’s Medal in recognition of his outstanding services to Brass Bands and in 1996 he received the English Master’s Dedicated Service Award.

David was the first Chairman of the National Association of Brass Band Adjudicators.
